The Society of Illustrators invites artists, publishers, and agents in the children’s book field to submit to the 31st annual exhibition of The Original Art. Founded by Dilys Evans in 1980, the show celebrates the fine art of children’s book illustration. It has been sponsored by the Society of Illustrators for the past twenty-one years.
The selection process will be by a jury of outstanding illustrators, art directors, editors, and experts in the field of children’s publishing. They will choose the books that will be represented in the show and select gold and silver medal recipients. Jurying is anonymous, and an artist may have no more than two books accepted for the show.

Publishers, please pass along an entry form or information to eligible artists if you are not able to submit their work.
ELIGIBILITY
All entries must be published in the U.S. Books printed overseas are eligible.
Books © 2010 and 2011 and F&Gs © 2011 will be accepted.
Picture books and other illustrated books whose prime market is children twelve years and younger will be considered. Chapter/young adult book must have at least eight full-page images. No jackets. No textbooks.
Only illustrated books (traditional or digital media) are eligible.No photographic books.
HOW TO ENTER
Submit printed books or F&Gs. Entry material will not be returned.
Entries will be donated to appropriate charities.
Fill in all the information on the entry form and tape it to the back of the book.Artist’s address, not c/o publisher or representative, is required.
ENTRY FEE $30 per title $20 for SI members submitting their own work
Fee must accompany entries. Please make checks payable to: Society of Illustrators. If paying by credit card (Visa/MC/Amex), please attach information (type of card,
name on card, number, exp. date) on a separate sheet of paper with entry form.

JURY
Julie Danielson received her masters degree in Information Sciences at The University of Tennessee. She writes articles on children’s books and interviews their creators for Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast, a blog she co-founded that focuses primarily on illustration and picture books. She also writes a weekly column on children’s literature for Kirkus Reviews and is currently working on a book with Elizabeth Bird and Peter D. Sieruta. Tentatively titled Wild Things!: The True, Untold Stories Behind the Most Beloved Children’s Books and Their Creators, it will be published by Candlewick Press in 2013. Scott Gustafson is the illustrator of archetypal children’s books such as Peter Pan, Favorite Nursery Rhymes from Mother Goose, Nutcracker, and Classic Fairy Tales (The Greenwich Workshop Press). Recently, he has tried his hand at writing and illustrating, and his first novel, Eddie: The Lost Youth of Edgar Allan Poe, will be released by Simon & Schuster this summer. In addition, he has worked on film projects for DreamWorks and PDI and has created character designs for the animated TV show, Chugginton. His illustrations also appear in limited-edition prints and on collector plates, greeting cards, and gift wrap. His website is www.scottgustafson.com.
John Bemelmans Marciano is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. In addition to carrying on his grandfather Ludwig Bemelmans’s legacy with such books as Madeline at the White House, he writes and illustrates his own books for children, writes the Leisl of the Woods series for Lucky Kids magazine, and recently curated “Drawn in Brooklyn,” an exhibition of children’s book illustration at the Brooklyn Public Library. In his other life, he writes and illustrates humorous nonfiction for adults, including the popular Anonyponymous: The Forgotten People Behind Ordinary Words. His website is www.anonyponymous.com.
Sean Qualls is the illustrator of celebrated books for children, including Before John Was a Jazz Giant by Carole Boston Weatherford (Henry Holt), a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor book; Dizzy by Jonah Winter (Scholastic), an ALA Notable Book, a Kirkus Best Book, and a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year; Little Cloud and Lady Wind by Toni and Slade Morrison; and Giant Steps by Spike and Tonya Lee (both from Simon & Schuster). He also creates art for magazines, newspapers, and advertisements, and his work has been shown in galleries in New York City and across the country. His website is: www.seanqualls.com.
Erin E. Stead is the illustrator of A Sick Day for Amos McGee (Neal Porter/Roaring Brook Press), written by her husband, Philip Stead. The book was published to starred reviews and spotlighted as a Publishers Weekly’s Flying Start, and it went on to be named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book and a Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book and to receive the Caldecott Medal. Erin creates her illustrations using woodblock printing techniques and pencil. Before turning full time to illustration, she worked at Books of Wonder in New York City and spent a year as assistant to the creative director at HarperCollins Children’s Books.
Hyewon Yum studied painting and printmaking at Seoul National University in South Korea and got her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She made her debut as a children’s book author/illustrator with Last Night, a wordless picture book that received starred reviews and won a Golden Kite Award for illustration from the SCBWI. Her second book, There Are No Scary Wolves, won the Founder’s Award for The Original Art 2011, and her third, The Twins’ Blanket, will be published in August 2011. Cecilia Yung is Art Director and Vice President at Penguin Books for Young Readers, overseeing illustration and design for G. P. Putnam’s Sons and Nancy Paulsen Books. She has worked with some of the major stars in children’s publishing, including Eric Carle, Tomie dePaola, Jan Brett, and Maira Kalman, as well as Caldecott medal and honor winners David Ezra Stein, E. B. Lewis, David Small, Simms Taback, Peggy Rathmann, Lane Smith, Jerry Pinkney, and Ed Young. She’s on the board of advisors of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and works with the illustrators committee to plan programs for picture book artists.
