The second of the three-part “Annual Exhibition: Illustrators 54,” the Book and Editorial Exhibit will be held at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators January 25 to February 18, 2012. It featured works by leading contemporary illustrators worldwide, selected by a prestigious jury of professionals.
Illustrations featured in the book category include all single image illustrations originally commissioned for use inside or on the covers of hardbound and paperback books, including fiction and non-fiction; children's and young adult literature and comic books. This year's Gold Medal winners include Anna and Elena Balbusso for their work Pregnant (AD Sheri Gee, The Folio Society), Edel Rodriguez's Krampus (AD Monte Beauchamp, BLAB!), and Jillian Tamaki's Black Beauty (AD Paul Buckley, Penguin Books). Silver Medals go to Kadir Nelson for Joe Louis (AD Martha Rago, HarperCollins Publishers), Mark Alan Stamaty for Love Goes to Buildings on Fire (AD Susan Mitchell and Charlotte Strick, Farrar, Straus and Giroux), and Sam Weber's Woods (Sheri Gee, The Folio Society).
Editorial illustrations include work commissioned by newspapers or magazines, medical and scientific journals or online magazines. Gold Medal Winners include Marc Burckhardt for his illustration Over-Fishing (AD Dena Verdesca and Robert Festino, Men's Health), Jason Holley for Animal Man (AD Peter Morance, New York Times), and Sam Weber's Cleopatra, (AD Bill Marr, National Geographic).
