Shadow Knights: The Art of Jeffrey Smith

In January 2009, illustrator Jeffrey Smith was contacted by David Talbot, founder and former editor-in-chief of one of the first web magazines, Salon.com to work on a new project; a book titled Shadow Knights.

The book tells the story of Winston Churchill’s SOE, an acronym for Special Operations Executive, and the courageous men and women who fought a secret war against the Nazis and Adolf Hitler.

The scope of this project was important enough to travel, so Jeffrey decided to take a trip to Paris. He traveled to some of the real places where the SOE fought and died for freedom.

In 2011, several of these paintings were exhibited in the Sequential category of the Society of Illustrators 45th Juried Annual Exhibition. Jeffrey later decided to donate the entire body of work, including photo comps and sketches, to the Permanent Collection of the Society’s Museum of American Illustration.
