Art Out Loud Online is part of the SI At Your Service program. Illustrators will take over our instagram and provide live demos and studio tours! Viewers must have an instagram account and phone/tablet/desktop to watch.

Lauren Simkin Berke is a Brooklyn based artist and illustrators, publishing art books and zines under the name Captain Sears Press, and creating illustrations for clients such as The New York Times, The Paris Review, Simon & Schuster, and Smithsonian Magazine. Berke's personal practice starts with drawing based on photographs and ephemera, which get transformed into paintings, etching, mixed media, assemblage, and collage work. Berke's illustrations are figurative, narrative and increasingly conceptual, intended to evoke the experiential memory of the reader. Berke has been recognized by American Illustration, the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, and Print Magazine.

Berke's first picture book, Were I Not a Girl: The Inspiring and True Story of Dr. James Barry published by Schwartz & Wade Books will be available on Oct. 20th. Author Lisa Robinson and Berke are having an event to celebrate the release of the book with the Bureau of General Services Queer Division, via Zoom, on Oct 22nd at 7pm. If you want to attend you'll need to rsvp via Eventbrite: here
