ABRAMS ComicArts: Celebrating 10 Years

ABRAMS was founded in 1949, and for 70 years has been the premier publisher of illustrated books. From our inception, we have identified and celebrated classical, contemporary, and groundbreaking art, championing burgeoning creative forms and presenting them in beautifully produced and authoritatively written art books.

Building off of a tradition that started with the publication of such seminal works as The Art of Walt Disney by Christopher Finch in 1973 and The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics by Bill Blackbeard in 1977, the Abrams ComicArts imprint was formed in 2009, publishing award-winning monographs, and original fiction and nonfiction graphic novels that illuminate the world of comics and comics art. Our goal is to maintain the fine-art tradition for which ABRAMS is known, while defining the medium of comics and comics art for generations to come.

Over the past ten years, Abrams ComicArts has published the work of acclaimed creators such as Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, Will Eisner, George Herriman, Charles M. Schulz, and Rube Goldberg; more recent comics artists like Daniel Clowes and Jaime Hernandez; as well as original graphic novels by Derf Backderf (My Friend Dahmer), Thi Bui (The Best We Could Do), John Jennings and Damian Duffy (Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaption), Bill Griffith (Nobody’s Fool), and Brian Fies (Mom’s Cancer and A Fire Story). These high-quality, thoughtfully designed books have helped changed the comics landscape with their presentation of comics as art.

With Abrams ComicArts: Celebrating 10 Years, curated by editorial director Charles Kochman, we offer a behind-the-scenes look at a selection of art from our list of nearly 100 graphic novels and art books. By looking back at these first ten years, we hope to shine a light on our future, heading there hand in hand with creators old and new, as well as with readers and comics fans of all ages.
