Drawn to the Music
Whether you "Paint it Black" as the Rolling Stones wrote it, "Draw the Line" as Aerosmith sang it (Hirschfeld illustrated their iconic cover), pay homage to Andy Warhol as Bowie played it, or a tribute to "Picasso Baby" as JZ rapped it, music has always been influenced by art and art by music.
Artist members of the Society have chosen a line from the lyrics of a song and illustrated it in the medium and size of their choice.
At the conclusion of the SI exhibit, the show will travel to FTC The Warehouse/ StageOne music venue in Connecticut, where a second opening reception will take place, followed by a concert.
Curated by Leslie Cober-Gentry
This exhibition was originally founded by Ned Glattauer and George Wilson. They created OUR OWN SHOW, now known as Members Open, which has grown into a respected annual event at the Society of Illustrators. Ned and George were honored by the Board of Directors in 2000 with the Dean Cornwell Recognition Award. George was honored posthumously.
The Stevan Dohanos Award, named in honor of the Federal office muralist and American painter, honors the best piece in the show. This year's Award goes to Anna and Elena Balbusso for their piece "In the Blood of Eden." Honorable mentions go to Jeff Preston for "Green River" and Youlian Tabakov for "The Cat Sailor."
An Opening Reception will take place on Friday, November 4th. Click here to view a list of featured artists.
