School Programs during The Art of MARCH: A Civil Rights Masterpiece

The Art of MARCH: A Civil Rights Masterpiece offers a unique opportunity for school students to learn from, put into context, and connect in a deeply personal way to this essential, award-winning resource. This exhibition will be the very first time the original works are on display, and we hope to welcome many schools to the Society for arts educational programming during the run of the exhibition, February 28th and June 30th, 2018.

The Society encourages local teachers to take advantage of the unique and significant opportunity to incorporate a visit to see the original works in conjunction with the reading of MARCH in classrooms, and units of study around the civil rights or other human rights movements. As a graphic memoir authored by a major historical figure, MARCH offers rich opportunities for classroom instruction, aligned with Common Core Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies. In 2016, MARCH became part of the NYC Department of Education’s Passport to Social Studies program for eighth graders.

In keeping with the Society's mission, programs will focus predominantly on the art of illustration while aligning with the NYC Department of Education's Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. We will explore how the comics of illustrator Nate Powell communicate emotions, events and compelling messages that bring Congressman John Lewis’s experiences and the civil rights movement to life in an accessible, powerful way.

Please contact Aliza Boyer, Director of Education and Public Programs, at aliza@societyillustrators.org or 212.838.2560 for more information or to make a reservation for your class visit to the Society of Illustrators.

We look forward to seeing you here!
